Austin Hangout answers one question better than any other: where should we go? It is an independent guide to the city's best bars, patios, swimming holes, coffee shops, live-music rooms, and late-night spots — the places that make Austin worth living in and worth visiting.
What This Site Covers
Every guide here is organized the way people actually decide on a night out: by mood and by moment. Patio season. Happy hour. The dive that never closes. The spring-fed pool that runs 68°F in August. The honky-tonk where the two-step lesson is free on Tuesdays. We name real venues — no invented spots, no pay-to-play rankings — and we keep the practical details straight: neighborhood, vibe, what to order, when to show up.
Our Approach
Pages are built to be useful first. No pop-ups, no paywalls, no auto-playing video, no ten paragraphs of preamble before the answer. Just clear recommendations, presented well, with enough character to feel like a tip from a friend rather than a press release. When we're not certain a place is still worth the trip, we say so or leave it off.
Five Moods, One City
The site shifts to match where your evening is headed. Use the mood switcher in the corner to move between five looks:
- Happy Hour — warm amber glow, the golden-hour default.
- Neon Buzz — electric pink-and-cyan, peak Saturday night.
- Patio Daylight — bright and easy, for the long lazy afternoon.
- Dive Bar — smoky reds and greens, jukebox lighting.
- Last Call — cool midnight blues for the walk home.
